Heritage Day
Heritage Day 2023
The Simon’s Town Museum and the Simon’s Town
Phoenix Committee have organized this annual heritage day March since 1996. It
is a day when Simonites who were forcibly removed reclaim the town and
commemorate our forced goodbyes. It is a bitter sweet day of reunions of old
friends.
This year we wanted to make the day
intergenerational. We had the Ocean View khoi group, the Kleinberg Marching
Band, the Silverjare Senior Group, the Senior Support Group, the Women’s Forum,
and Members of Forever Young.
Our guest speaker for the day was author Chase
Rhys and our Guest Performer for the day was Simonite, Owen Davis. We were also
lucky to be able to screen Lauren Loubser’s documentary ‘Removed’ which tells
the story of Redhill.
The day ended off with dancing to Judy
Boucher. It was a fantastic day despite a traffic control hiccup.
Thank
you to the local businesses who supported us. Buco Simon’s Town, In2Food,
Montagu Fruits, The Care Company, Springbok Delhi, Flowers for Africa, and
Golden Arrow HCI Foundation.
Without
all of the contributions today big and small it would not have been possible.
Today is testament to what is possible when we work together.
